Emo hairstyle, thin hair, black hair... but the question is how to cut the sides?

I need to cut the sides off my hair... but I don't want my ears to show... and I don't want to look like a beetle (which I do end up looking like sometimes cause my hair curls over my ears haha.... even when I straighten my hair... I don't have the straightener on a very high setting because thin hair can damage easily)... advice... and I always straighten my hair and use garnier fructis conditioner and shampoo.... do not discriminate against emo's or so that's what people say I am... alternative is the proper term haha
